Previously designers were only required to have one skillset – whether that was print design, web design, illustration, or interaction design. But I have noticed an increasing trend in designers being required to do and know everything, especially web technologies such as hand-coding HTML, flash, and even programming.

I know with my job I wear the hats of all types of designers – and even that of SEO and usability expert. I was taught to do all these things in school, however many designers that come from art college backgrounds have no idea how to even start.

What are your throughts and experiences with design jobs? Have you been able to find a job where you only do one task, or do you have to play the role of many people?

i work as the photo editor and web designer for a communications dept in the dc area.
there aren't many people, and there's a lot of work to go around, so most of us double up and fill the gaps we can.

i'd love it if they hired a few more people and let some of us get some more training...

In my experience workng at a large international agency, I've found is that as a designer, art director or creative director, you need to understand these things (i.e. what they can do, the current state of development and how it can benefit your clients); however, we work with very specialized talented flash and html designers & developers (who focus on how to do the latest things and how to make them work for our clients). We pair up with them and consult them about do'ability as we design. This allows for us to stay on the design & strategy end while they are allowed to focus on how to do the creative side of their technology.

I have noticed it as well.

I come from a film/television/commercial production background. I jumped back onto the creative side of things about a year ago. Now I have added photography, branding, marketing, package design, character design/development, copywriting, etc. to my arsenal of skills.

But I really don't care or want to learn HTML.... I don't mind working along side a web designer to help them accomplish a goal. If I have to.... yes I will learn HTML.... but I really don't want to. There are so many other things I would like to learn design wise to amp up what I already have....
